After this came powerhouse singles The Climb and 7 Things, which led to the release of Breakout, an album which stood completely unconnected to Hannah Montana. The album hit No 1 in the US and was certified platinum.
In 2009, Miley released an extended play, The Time Of Our Lives, which produced her global hit, Party In The USA, which was written by a then unknown, Jessie J.
After this, Miley continued to put out music, her 2010 album, Can't Be Tamed, was a worldwide hit however, Miley also kept up with her acting during this period appearing in films The Last Song in 2010, So Undercover in 2011 and LOL in 2012.
In 2013, it all changed for Miley. She was already well known internationally and highly successful, however it was this year she was promoted and became a global megastar.
The release of hit track We Can't Stop coincided with a concerted effort from Miley to shed her squeaky clean Disney image. She cut off all her hair, took off her clothes in videos, said what she thought, cut off her engagement to hottie Liam Hemsworth, took on the provocative twerking dance craze and generally became a tabloid's dream.
However, it worked! Her album, Bangerz was No 1 everywhere and produced another hit single, along with a controvertial nude video, Wrecking Ball.
Miley then went on to record some impressive collaborations including Feelin' Myself (will.i.am featuring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana and DJ Mustard), Come Get It Bae (Pharrell Williams featuring Miley Cyrus) and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (The Flaming Lips featuring Miley Cyrus and Moby).
Miley hit the road in 2014 on the massive Bangerz World Tour and she's announced she's working on a new album.
Like Marmite, you either love her or hate her, but one thing you can't do, is ignore Miley. And you better get used to it - she's going to be out there for a very long time!
