Wear a design classic

A fashion classic epitomised by Audrey Hepburn, the Little Black Dress is a staple for any woman’s wardrobe.

Adele stole the show at last year’s BRITs when she performed Someone Like You. With a a simplistic stage and stripped back piano accompaniment, she chose to pair things off with a sophisticated LBD.
It certainly didn’t hurt: Adele was the hit of the night and Someone Like You is now nominated for Best Single at the BRITs a year on.

Stand out from the crowd
The Spice Girls were always going to be show-stoppers on the night, but Geri Halliwell even managed to outdo Victoria Beckham in the fashion stakes in 1997.
Performing Who Do You Think You Are?, Geri wore the iconic Union Jack dress. She was originally due to wear a black Gucci dress but decided it was too busy and, "to celebrate being British”, her sister stitched a Union Jack tea towel to the front.
Geri sold the dress a year later, raising £41,000 for charity.

Show off your bling
No self-respecting hip-hop star is going to show up at an event without some serious ice. Cartier watches and Tiffany rings are de rigour, along with an impeccably tailored suit.

Not to be outdone in the bling department, Kanye West took to the BRITs stage in 2006 surrounded by gold. Well, gold-painted dancers to be exact.

Inspired by James Bond, Kanye performed Gold Digga with his dancers sprayed head-to-toe in gold paint. If that wasn’t enough, Kanye took home the famous gold statue for International Male Solo Artist.

Flaunt your assets
Kylie Minogue may be a pop princess, but also she reigns supreme when it comes to showing her booty off. The famous hot-panted bottom was as much the star of the night as the singer herself in 2002.
Ejected onto the stage on a giant CD player, Kylie performed Can’t Get You Out Of My Head mashed up with New Order’s Blue Monday. Wearing a tiny dress courtesy of Dolce & Gabanna and thigh-high silver boots, Kylie stole the show.

Dress up, not down

Anyone can do casual. Dress up and make an impression, and what better way than with a classic tux?

Tinie Tempah was the man of the moment at last year’s BRITs and he dressed like a winner, opting for a crisp white tuxedo and bow-tie. The rapper was a class act as he picked up British Breakthrough Act and Best British Single for his debut Pass Out.

He clearly hasn’t lost his fashion sense either. He’s just been named GQ’s Best Dressed Man of the Year.

Leave something to the imagination
Sometimes it doesn’t pay to let it all hang out. Lady Gaga – a fan of leotards and dresses made from beef carpaccio – isn’t usually one to cover up, but even she chose to cover up in 2010.
A year after wearing a teapot-inspired two-piece with the Pet Shop Boys, Gaga arrived at The BRITs covered head-to-toe in a three-tiered pleated ensemble. It was perhaps a sign of respect, with Mother Monster dedicating the night to the late Alexander McQueen.
It wasn’t long though before she opted for a lace bodysuit. It didn’t hurt her chances either. Gaga won three awards including Best International Breakthrough Act.

Go retro
If you’re stuck for something to wear, it never hurts to look back at past eras for fashion inspiration. Whether its 80s punk or 20s chic, going retro is in vogue.
In 2008, Mark Ronson showed off his love for the 50s with Brylcreemed hair, blue tailored suit and loafers. During his medley of hits, the late, great Amy Winehouse completed the look by singing Valerie with her trademark beehive characteristic of the 60s.

Don’t forget to accessorize

Accessories can really make or break an outfit. Some beautiful earrings, an eye-catching necklace or a must-have bag can create a show-stopping look. Or, in Take That’s case, some riot shields.

As if performing with Robbie Williams at the BRITs for the first time in 16 years wasn’t enough of a statement piece, Take That opted to accessorize their performance with dancers dressed as policemen, complete with riot shields emblazoned with the boyband’s logo.

Perhaps deciding it was a fashion faux pas, the dancers then stripped on stage, hiding their modesty behind a giant Union Jack flag.

We all have moments when we look in our wardrobes and hate everything. On those depressing occasions, we do one of two things: max the credit card out on the high street, or do what Girls Aloud did.
In 2009, the girl band performed The Promise whilst apparently wearing nothing at all. Hidden behind giant pink feathered fans, the girls’ saucy show girl routine celebrated them bagging their first ever BRIT award.
