Weekly Round Up

The Weekly Round Up has written almost exclusively about Beyonce, Jay Zed, and their new baby, Blue Ivy, for the past two instalments now.

Now we don't mean the sort of ‘exclusively’ that implies an actual conversation between the new parents and this humble page, like the alleged Beyonce's “first interview since giving birth” in Star Magazine last week. Rather, it's ‘exclusively’ as in 'not much else has been discussed'. The debut of Blue Ivy on the celebrity circuit has eclipsed most other news, like the giant baby at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey floating across the sun.

So what's been going down, homeslice?

The Academy Award (the 'Oscars') nominations were released. That was a pretty big deal. Amongst the list was a potential award for Man or Muppet by Bret McKenzie for Best Original Song. Lady Gaga and Elton John’s duet, Hello Hello, from Gnomeo and Juliet missed the shortlist, which was very short indeed at only two songs. The longlist had 41 considerations, and most other categories have these whittled down to around five or so nominees. You would have thought artists of Gaga and Elton John's stature could have fudged their way in, regardless of the quality of their song.

Now that The Muppets are officially Oscar nominated, the world is automatically a better place. The film highlights the struggles of a semi-retired Hollywood actor, called Kermit the Frog, and how his green complexion prevents everyday occurences from being particularly easy… if only he were blue. DAMMIT IVY, STOP CREEPING IN.

More importantly, the nominations for the Golden Collars, a canine movie awards show, were also announced. Leading the pack is the tremendously talented Jack Russell, Uggie, star of The Artist and Water for Elephants. It may be a fitting sign off to end his lengthy five-film career, as spokespeople for the dog hinted at his retirement. “He’s at the stage where he just says, ‘I think I want to go and lay in the sun by the pool.’”

One man who has continuously refused to call it a day, Hulk Hogan, revealed in an interview with The Sun this week that he almost joined an early version of the legendary metal band Metallica.

“I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler,” Hogan recalled, puffing out his cheeks and pumping up for an absent crowd. “I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich [Metallica’s drummer] and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn’t work out.”

Presumably becoming carried away with his nostalgia, Hogan then challenged the British rock band Kasabian to a wrestling match. Apparently, they’ve been using ‘Hulk Hogan’ as a pseudonym when staying in hotels.

“I know Rollerball Rocco [a British wrestler from the early 80s]…He’s my guy. I’ll be his tag partner and sort [Kasabian] out for trashing hotel rooms under my name.”

But what does one do when Hulkamania come for you?
