As with Bad Boys, Broken Heels and All Night Long, Alexandra Burke's latest musical serving is upbeat and up tempo, however Start Without You is more of a bright and fruity little number with a sound quite unlike her previous Top Ten hits.
The melody of the chorus is somewhat of a homage to Iko Iko (Y'know, that little ditty that goes, "My grandma and your grandma sitting by the fire" - that one!) and I must admit, it drove me slightly insane trying to figure out where the flippin' 'eck I knew it from.
With this recognisable melody over some Caribbean rhythms, Burkey has revived a 90s summer pop sound that would make Chaka Demus and Pliers proud. It even has a gruff voiced man rapping during the middle - a trademark of many a 1990s smash!
However, Burkey could be deemed as being... errrm... a little ahead of her time by emulating such a sound which, although has been freshened up by Gaga producer RedOne, still sounds a bit cheesy rather than retro-nostalgic.
On the other hand, Start Without You is still a fun single that will undoubtedly be a crowd pleaser for fans during concert between you and me, by the end, I was dancing around my bedroom to it!
