Friday Film Fest

Is Nicolas Cage a vampire? A shaman? Or just a massive weirdo?

Nicolas Cage is one of the highest-earning and most celebrated actors in Hollywood. He's also a bit of a weirdo.

His strange behaviour and unpredictable career choices have sparked debate over his sanity, and most recently, his humanity.

In an interview with David Letterman earlier in the month, the actor was questioned about a portrait of a man from 1860s Tennessee which bares him an uncanny resemblance.

The photograph has triggered rumours Cage is a vampire, a claim some feel is supported by his strange behaviour and persona.

Cage responded to the claims: "Now look I don't drink blood, and last time I looked in the mirror I had a reflection, so I'm not going with his vampire theory."

Things got even weirder this week in an interview with ITN about his new flick, Ghost Runner: Spirit of Vengeance. The actor opened up about the "nouveau shamanic" acting style he used when shooting his latest film, in which he channels the traditions of ancient medicine men.

"I put on Afro-Caribbean paint.. and black out my eyes," he said. "So I'd look like this sort of Afro-Caribbean voodoo icon."

"I was trying to stimulate my mind - or trick my mind - into believing I was this character from another dimension."

"I would walk on the set and wouldn't speak to anybody, wouldn't say a word. So I projected this aura of horror, which created fear in my fellow actors, which then inspired me to believe I really was this character."

The original Ghost Rider film raked in over £150 million worldwide at the box office in 2007. Will Cage's unconventional acting method in the sequel result in another box office smash?

Regardless of whether he's actually a vampire, a shaman or just a tremendously talented weirdo, seeing Cage battle a satanic curse in 3D seems like a terrifying journey worth the price of admission.
