After the Irish trio went to No.1 with their debut album, The Script went on to find success Stateside. Now back on home soil, guitarist Mark from the band tells us about the follow-up album Science and Faith, and his thoughts on boybands. Your new single is For the First Time. Why did you choose that particular track to kick the new album off with? It was the first complete song we'd written for the album and so it was the song that kicked it all off and we felt it was just a good introduction back to The Script. A lot of your songs have been about relationships. Your new album is called Science and Faith. Are you tackling big heavy subjects this time around or is the title a red herring? I like to think that relationships are a big subject because every man and woman our age has this subject on their minds constantly. It's one of the subjects we talk about a lot. Being Irish, everyone is going to think that we're talking about religion and science but actually we're talking about the ebb and flow and the communication and miscommunication between men and women. Your first album went to No.1. That's a pretty big act to follow up. Did that put pressure on you when making the second album? Just a tad! A band has their whole life to write their first record and then they only have four months to write their second. It's like, 'quick lads, turn on the inspiration button and be creative!' That side of things is a little bit intense because we've been touring for two years as well, but we have a lot of confidence in what we do. I think by not using other producers, we've found a sound of our own that people can call The Script. And how would you define that sound? I like to think everybody else defines it. We're slightly pop mixed with rock and R'n'B. I think we put music that we feel will best go to those stories, and that falls in the pop/rock bracket alright. You managed to find success in the States, particularly with the single Breakeven. How did you find touring and promoting in such a huge country? Exhausting! It took us fifteen months to make any kind of impact over there. We had been touring every pub we could find. We'd have played at a divorce if you'd let us. I think a lot of bands don't understand that when you go to America you have to press the reset button and be a new band again, and go back to basics. After the album is released, what's next for The Script? Were very humble lads and we always say that this could be pulled from under feet at any moment. The music business is a very fickle place. I just hope that we write music and people appreciate that music and come and see our shows. Other than that, were just happy to be employed! You and Danny used to be in a boyband called MyTown. For a long time boybands have been absent in the charts and now JLS have found success and The Wanted just scored a No.1. Do you think it's a good thing that boybands are coming back in to fashion? I think the industry is starved for a good talented band. I really hate crap music and seeing a bunch of people that aren't talented. There have been great bands before. NSync and Take That are classic examples of bands that have genuine talent. I'm always for a genuinely talented person doing something. For the First Time is released on September 5th. The album Science and Faith follows a week later.
