Singer follows in the footsteps of Jessie J and Adele
Michael Kiwanuka has won the coveted BBC Sound of 2012, tipping him for huge success this year. The 24 year old beat competition from runner-up Frank Ocean, and other nominees Azealia Banks, Skrillex and Niki & The Dove.
The Sound of 2012 list was compiled using recommendations from 184 key UK-based music critics, broadcasters and bloggers. Now in its tenth year, the competition has previously been won by music heavyweights Adele, Ellie Goulding, Corinne Bailey Rae, 50 Cent and - last year's winner - Jessie J.
Kiwanuka started out as a session guitarist, working with Tinie Tempah's producer Labrinth, before being signed as a singer. He has since supported Adele on her headline tour.
He said: "I never expected to be recognised in this way.
"It's a great surprise and it means a lot that people are accepting the music they've heard so far, and it will bring the music to many more people, which for any musician is a great privilege."
The runners-up this year should not feel disheartened either. Previous artists nominated for the prize over the years have found great success. Just ask Florence and the Machine, Dizzee Rascal, and a certain Lady Gaga who came sixth in 2009.
