Can you believe it’s been 25 years since Kylie first began her pop domination?

Since the early days of bad perms and doing the Locomotion, Kylie has gone on to be been embraced as our pop princess, hot pants and all.

From On A Night Like This to Slow, she’s had some of the biggest pop hits ever and become loved for her mix of girl-next-door friendliness and saucepot persona.

Britain first fell in love with Kylie when she was the feisty, greasy Aussie mechanic Charlene.

Her fictional romance with Scott on Oz soap Neighbours turned us Brits into a bunch of romantics in the late 80s. The fact that Kylie and Jason Donovan were a real-life couple only fuelled their popularity.

Their on-screen wedding saw an audience of 19 million tune in in the UK. That’s only 5 million less than who watched Wills and Kate tie the knot last year! 

It has often been asked if Kylie would return to Ramsey Street, but the singer admitted to Access Hollywood that "that time has passed." "Can you imagine if Charlene [came back to] Ramsay St. in the Mini that she left in 20 years ago?"

Kylie released I Should Be So Lucky in 1987, the time of permed hair, polka dots and stonewashed denim. The singer has recently said that she was so busy on a UK promo tour at the time that she doesn't even remember recording the single. Still, the song reached No 1 in the UK, Australia, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Israel and Hong Kong.

Her debut album, Kylie, with its now iconic dodgy cover, spent more than a year in the UK album charts, including several weeks at the top.

The album went gold in the United States, and the single, The Loco-Motion, reached No 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

From 1987 t0 1992, Kylie became the poster girl of the pop producing team Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Churning out hit after hit, Kylie released three albums under their guise.

Kylie later admitted feeling stifled and wanted greater artistic control of her career. "I was very much a puppet in the beginning. I was blinkered by my record company. I was unable to look left or right,” she said.

Still, the era saw Kylie release some of her best-known hits, including Better the Devil You Know and Shocked. We also the popstar's sexy side start to emerge as she swapped straight-leg jeans for hot pants. And, as we all know, it wouldn't be for the last time... 

Step Back in Time with this blast from the past...

In 1993, Kylie signed with a new label Deconstruction, ironically titled since it led to Kylie's career falling apart. It's hard to imagine Kylie as being unpopular but many consider the rest of the 90s as Kylie’s wilderness years with her star power fading and chart positions free-falling.

Things began promisingly with the epic Confide in Me. However, Kylie was criticised for seemingly attempting to forget her pop past and become an indie artist. Her album Kylie Minogue – originally titled Impossible Princess – was her lowest-charting LP. 

During this period, Kylie was credited with taking career risks, such as teaming up with Nick Cave for their haunting Where the Wild Roses Grow. 

Popularity waining, a campaign by Virgin Radio stated, "We've done something to improve Kylie's records: we've banned them." A poll conducted by Smash Hits voted her the "worst-dressed person, worst singer and second-most very horrible thing—after spiders". Ouch! 

Is it any wonder Kylie escaped to space for her Put Yourself in My Place video? 

In 2000, Kylie spun things around. Her single Spinning Around and those hot pants catapulted Kylie back to No 1 and stardom. It sold one million copies in the UK, and was the first time Kylie had been at the top spot for a decade.

Further hits followed from Kylie’s disco album Light Years, including a collaboration with Robbie Williams – then the man of the moment – on single Kids.

Kylie also embraced her camp factor in front of millions with a performance of Dancing Queen in pink feathers at Australia’s closing ceremony of the Olympics, and her role as the Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge. 

Fever was the album that saw Kylie really become “cool” and rise to superstardom.

Can’t Get You of My Head was a worldwide hit in 2001 and became the most played song of the 00’s. Rolling Stone described the single as "easily the best and most omnipresent dance track of the new century."

The music video immediately became iconic, and the futuristic minimalist concept of the album was worked into the choreography and imagery of her performances. The most noted of these was perhaps Kylie’s mash-up of Can’t Get Blue Monday Out of My Head at the BRITs in 2002, where she also scooped the award for Best International Album and Best International Female. 

Kylie also became the first face on 4Music, with the TV premiere of the Fever tour being the first thing ever shown on our channel!

Kylie followed up Fever with ninth album Body Language in 2003, which she described as “electro with curves.”

Channelling Bridget Bardot in her new look, Kylie went to No 1 with the Grammy-nominated Slow. She also tried a more urban sound with Red Blooded Woman. 

A year later, Kylie released a Greatest Hits, which saw her Scissors Sisters collaboration I Believe in You go to No 1. 

Watch the second single to be releasing from Kylie's Greatest Hits, Giving You Up, which saw the pop princess being anything but pint-sized. 

In 2005, during her Showgirl Tour, Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news shocked the world and saw celebs rush to wish their support, including Madonna. The Queen of Pop said: "Aside from being tremendously talented, Kylie's a fighter and I know this is a battle she will win."  

Win she did and, at the end of 2006, Kylie resumed the tour, renaming it the Showgirl Homecoming Tour.

Now five years in remission, Kylie wrote on Twitter last year: "Yes. Five years in remission! Love and gratitude for your support, love and positivity if you are in need. xxxxx (sic)"

Kylie’s tenth album X was released in 2007. Despite being her big comeback, Kylie’s single 2 Hearts misfired, failing to go to No 1 and the album received mixed reviews. Further singles Wow and In My Arms entered the Top 10.

Kylie also turned to a more avant-garde look during this period, which led to fans wondering if she had lost her way.

Minogue later said, in an interview with Popjustice: "In retrospect we could definitely have bettered it [the album], I'll say that straight up. Given the time we had, it is what it is.

"I didn’t quite get it with X... I knew people weren’t entirely happy, I knew there were genius moments on it and perhaps parts were a bit ahead of their time but it didn’t sit with me and my audience at that time."

Her X tour, however, was a success and Kylie later went on to tour in the US, release a documentary White Diamond of her time on the road, and was also honoured with an OBE from the Queen.

In the summer of 2010, Kylie released her most recent album, Aphrodite. Talking to Popjustice, the singer described the album as "joyful. It’s like the jus of all the best bits of my musical career."

The album debuted at No 1 in the UK charts, exactly 22 years after her first UK No 1 hit. The album saw the release of singles All the Lovers, Get Out of My Way, Better Than Today and Put Your Hands Up. The general consensus was that Kylie had returned to form.

The Aphrodite Les Folies tour was extremely successful, drawing on the themes of ancient Greece and was a highly technical stage show. Costing an estimated $25 million to produce, it ran for 63 dates, visiting 23 countries.

And so here we are, the 25th year of Kylie as a popstar!

Plenty of surprises are promised throughout 2012, including concerts, special music videos and an orchestral album of reworked hits. There is also rumours of a TV special featuring a duet with Madonna.
