Choose YOUR Best Group of 2012
We've got boybands and girlbands, pop-rock bands and hip hop duos - with so many great groups this year, it's going to be tough to decide. We don't envy you!
After a few years off the top, Adam Levine and his band set the charts on fire again in 2011 with their team-up with Christina Aguilera on Moves Like Jagger. It wasn't just a one-off return to form for the US band, as this June they had their first ever UK No 1 with the insanely catchy Payphone, the first single from their fourth album Overexposed. Vote for Maroon 5.
JLS have proven themselves as an unstoppable hit-making machine, but they took a little break from the spotlight earlier this year to work on new album Evolution, and on 27 July Marvin married long-term girlfriend Rochelle from The Saturdays. But it was new music we wanted, and the boys delivered big time in October with Hottest Girl In The World. Was it hot enough to get your vote? Vote for JLS.
Cover Drive scored their first hit of the year in January when they shot to the top with Twilight - and despite the title, no... the song had nothing to do with teenage vampires. Their winning streak continued in May when they slowed things down with the emotional ballad Sparks, which sent them all the way to No 3. The band joined forces with Far East Movement in June for the feel good party hit Turn Up The Love, and in August teamed up with Dappy for their summer anthem Explode. Vote for Cover Drive.
The Wanted started off 2012 in the charts with epic ballad Warzone, complete with slow-motion explosions and burning pianos - oh the drama! Chasing The Sun followed in April and was written by non other than Example. With it's vampire-themed video, it was a big hit here and in the USA, where the boys were starting to get quite a following. They capped off the year with I Found You as they worked towards the release of their third album. It looks like 2013 is going to be just as big for our boys! Vote for The Wanted.
London trio Alexandra, Karis and Courtney charmed the pants off us in 2012 with their cheeky style and stunning vocals. They burst into the charts in March in an explosion of colour with their eye-popping Love Me video, featuring US star Travie McCoy. In June it was time to release their follow up, and they came back swinging with the sixties style ballad Black Heart. That same month they were hand-picked by Nicky Minaj as the opening act on her UK tour. And if that wasn't enough, TLC's Chilli and T-Boz appeared in the video for their cover of Waterfalls! Vote for Stooshe.
Rizzle Kicks kicked off the new year by teaching us a brand new dance move, The Hump, as featured in their No 2 hit video Mama Do The Hump. It was performed drunkenly at many a New Year’s party and, in the video, even their mums AND Gavin and Stacey star James Corden got in on the act. After all that humping they probably needed a bit of a sit down, and their next release Travellers Chant was a much more low-key affair. Next up was Dreamers in July, with a cameo appearance from Dappy playing tennis. Random! Vote for Rizzle Kicks.
We hadn’t seen The Script for a while when 2012 kicked off – their last known sighting in the Top 10 was back in 2010 with big ballad For The First Time. But suddenly it was announced lead singer Danny was to be a mentor on brand new TV talent show The Voice. The show was a big hit, and Danny’s habit of dancing on his chair during performances made him a firm favourite with viewers. He also struck-up a firm friendship will fellow judge will.i.am, so much so that the Black Eyed Pea teamed up with The Script on their No 1 single from September, Hall Of Fame. Vote for The Script.
Far East Movement
Californian dance dynamos Far East Movement made a big splash on the music scene in 2010 with the club classic Like A G6, before they disappeared off the radar for a couple years. But they were back with a bang in May this year with new track Live My Life and a video that looked like the world’s craziest ever Amsterdam stag do, with a guest appearance from LMFAO star RedFoo. Next came Turn Up The Love - a hook up with fellow Best Group nominees Cover Drive - which gave them another smash in June. Vote for Far East Movement.
What a year it’s been for One Direction – the year they became global megastars, with their Up All Night album reaching No 1 in a staggering 16 countries. They even performed at the Olympic closing ceremony, one of the biggest TV events of the year. But what about the music?! Well in January we saw them causing chaos on the streets of London in the video for One Thing, then in May we got a glimpse of their world tour in the live concert vid for More Than This. And if the boys hadn't already worked hard enough, next they dished up the lead single from their second album, Live While We’re Young, complete with a cheeky glamping video. Vote for One Direction.
Little Mix started off the year on a high after winning X Factor and having a smash hit with the winners single Cannonball. The girls disappeared for a while while they worked on their debut album, but didn't stay out of the media spotlight for long thanks to Perrie's much publicised romance with One Direction's Zayn. By August they were ready to unleash a brand new single on the world and Wings flew all the way to No 1. With their debut album set for release later this year, not to mention spooky new single DNA, there's no doubt Little Mix made a Big Splash in 2012. Vote for Little Mix.
